Palwal, Haryana

Palwal district, is the 21st district of Haryana state in northern India. According to tradition, the city of Palwal is named for the demon Palwali who was said to have ruled during the reign of Pandavas. It is a place of great antiquity, supposed to figure in the earliest Aryan traditions under the name of Apelava, part of the Pandava kingdom of Indraprastha, which was later restored by Vikramaditya.
Located in this district is a Producer Organization with 315 members and we interacted with some of the artisans of this organization on 7th and 8th Dec 2020. Majority of the artisans are women having expertise in Sujni Craft and Jaipuri Rajai. Once again it was extremely wonderful to see the women of our nation from rural regions stepping out of their homes to carve out a name for themselves and their Producer Organization. Their determination was evident in the fact that they came together in good numbers on both the days despite the possibility of roads and highways being blocked by protesting farmers.
