Rayagada, Odisha

Rayagada district in the state of Odisha is known as the most famous region of the state because of its longest human history. It has long and glorious historical records evident by copper plates, rock inscriptions as well as different coins, which clearly indicate the region was the centre of attraction in all ages. In the third century B.C., during the reign of Ashoka the Great, it was covered under great Kalinga empire. The Niyamgiri is a hill range situated in the districts of Rayagada and Kalahandi. The hills have one of India’s most pristine forests in the interior. It is bound by Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary on the north-west side and Kotgarh Wildlife Sanctuary on the north-east end.

On the 18th and 19th of January 2021, we were welcomed by an eager group of artisans belonging to a Producer Organization from this district. The more than 180 artisans belonging to this Producer Organization are experts in Dhokra art. The artisans were very keen to know and absorb new and innovative ideas to take their ancient art to the masses. Despite the limited resources and facilities, the dilligence in pursuing the vision to promote their art was something very much noteworthy.
