Serchhip, Mizoram

Serchip is the smallest district in the state of Mizoram but has the highest literacy rate not only in Mizoram but among the entire districts of India. The Tropic of Cancer passes through the district and is located in the central part of the state of Mizoram. Located in this district is the Vantawng Khawhthla waterfall, the highest waterfall in Mizoram and, probably, the most spectacular one too. Crisscrossing its way through huge boulders and rocks, this picturesque waterfall falling from a height of 220 m, is named after Vantawnga, who was a celebrated swimmer in the region.

On the 4th and 5th of January 2021, we had an opportunity to meet some of the artisans from among the approximately 800 members belonging to a Producer Organization in this District. These artisans are experts in weaving Mizo Traditional Textile Fabrics. The designs and colour combinations of the products were extremely beautiful. In fact, many of the members were carrying handbags that they themselves had handwoven. Despite the language barrier, it was a fascinating experience to communicate with some of these artisans from the Eastern region of our diverse country and witness their remarkable skill and talent!
